The Tailors' Tower

The Tailors' Tower was built up during the 15th century, following the franchises granted to the inhabitants of Cluj in 1405 by the Hungarian king Sigismund of Luxemburg for a new curtain wall of the town. Initially, the tower played a defensive role of the south-eastern part of the extended medieval precinct of the town. Located in one of the most exposed outposts of the urban fortified system, the tower is mentioned for the first time in 1475, during the reign of king Mathias Corvinus. At this date, the tower was already attributed to the tailors'gild for maintenance and defence.

In September 2007 , the City Hall of Cluj-Napoca began an amply action to restore and rearrange the Tower. This action was finished in May 2009.

Following this restoration process the Tower received a new public utility becoming the Centre for Urban Culture and was included in the sight seeing tour of the city. Due to the rearrangement of the interior rooms for the new utility, the edifice opened a cafeteria in the debasement, the ground and upper floors are destined for hosting various events, such as exhibitions, conferences, talk-shows, book release, concerts and other cultural events.

Today, the Tailors' Tower , a sight seeing spot and the place for events is under the administration of the Tourist Information Centre Cluj-Napoca.
